HOW TO FIGURE SALT LOADS FOR STARTER FERTILIZERS
I have had many questions come up on starter fertilizers and the “salt load” that they put on growing seeds. The easy way to figure the salt load is to use the percentage of N and K. For instance, 10-34-0 has a “salt load” figure of 11, if you look to the example below, 11, multiplied by the weight per gal and the percent of formulation, equals 6.6 lbs of “salt”. The maximum “salt” recommended in furrow should be no more than 8 lbs in medium to heavy soils. If in sandy soils, do not use a starter, as it may damage seed.

11 (lbs./gal)
6 (gal)
X 0.1 (percent of formulation)

6.6 lbs. “salt”
