Q:
What can I tankmix with Roundup in Roundup Ready soybeans
to control wild buckwheat?
A: Many farmers TRY Harmony GT (or the new SG formulation),
but Pursuit is much better. Plus, it leaves residual.
This doesnt work if youre going to rotate
to sugarbeets, sunfl owers, or a few other crops,
but if youll be going to corn or wheat next
year
no problem. Just keep the rate relatively
low. On our farm, we use 2 oz (half rate) of Pursuit.
Its not perfect, but it defi nitely helps. When
adding Pursuit, add non-ionic surfactant besides AMS,
too.
Q: How about lambsquarters?
A: Heres where Harmony GT (or SG) is the best
fi t. Sure, I like Valor or Domain lots better pre-emerge,
but if you didnt do that, use some Harmony GT.
Keep in mind, youll get some crop response,
and possibly a little antagonism on a few other weeds,
but nothing is better than Harmony GT on lambsquarters,
although Resource or Pursuit could help Roundup a
little bit.
Q: Waterhemp?
A: Increase your Roundup rate from 22 oz. of 6# Roundup
to at least 33, if not 44 oz. per acre. Otherwise,
you could add Flexstar or our old favorite (just kidding)
Cobra. Remember how we used to tell you to take a
2-week vacation immediately after spraying Cobra?
Oh, the memories.
Q: Volunteer corn?
A: Use Select Max at 6 oz. per acre. Youll get
good corn control AND a big rebate from Monsanto if
you used name brand Roundup. If you also used Harness
in your corn, your rebate is even bigger. Literally,
your net cost could be less than $1 per acre for Select
Max if you prepaid in December
AND used WeatherMAX and Harness on your farm. Thats
cheap considering volunteer corn is perhaps the biggest
yieldrobbing weed in soybeans.
Q: Is there any use for Classic with Roundup?
A: Yes. Although its not a popular tankmix,
Classic is very good on sunfl owers, cockleburs, and
velvetleaf. It alsohas good activity on problem weeds
like yellow nutsedge, marestail, jimsonweed, morningglory,
prickly lettuce, ragweed, and dandelion. Unlike most
other Roundup tankmix partners, Classic also has some,
but limited, residual activity.
Q: Can I put any insecticide with Roundup to control
soybean aphids, bean leaf beetles, grasshoppers, spider
mites, or other bugs?
A: Check the label, but just about any insecticide
I can think of CAN be tankmixed with Roundup.
Q: Can I foliar feed with Roundup?
A: Most foliar fertilizers can be tankmixed with Roundup,
but make sure you never have Lorsban in the tank,
too. Check with your fertilizer supplier before mixing
fertilizer with Roundup AND do a jar test to make
sure theyre compatible.
Q: How about fungicide?
A: Most fungicides CAN be tankmixed with Roundup,
BUT spray coverage is way more important with fungicide
than it is with Roundup. Roundup moves easily in the
phloem of the plant, which goes up and down, moving
the herbicide where it needs to be to stop your weeds.
Fungicide usually moves only in the xylem, which moves
upward only. In other words if you dont thoroughly
cover ALL the leaves on your plants from top to bottom,
diseases can still set in on untreated areas. If you
want to tankmix Roundup with fungicide, spray only
on calm days with fl at fan nozzles and NO drift retardant
for the best coverage and best results possible.
